Kellogg’s Cereal: A Breakfast Tradition

The first Kellogg’s cereal was discovered quite by accident when two brothers, W.K. Kellogg, and Dr. John Harvey Kellogg unintentionally created a dry flaked wheat product rather than the granola which they were attempting to make. This discovery was to lead to the introduction of the very first Kellogg’s cereal.

Although it was an accidental discovery, Corn Flakes breakfast cereal was now officially created and these dry ready to eat corn flakes were the beginning of a new way of looking at breakfast foods. Consumers now had a low fat breakfast alternative and a means of skipping the traditional high cholesterol breakfast of bacon and eggs.

Kellogg’s Company history:
The very first Kellogg’s dry cereal was accidentally discovered in the late 1800’s at the Battle Creek Sanatorium by W.K. Kellogg and his brother Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. The brothers had been working with wheat at the time and what should have turned out to be granola instead turned out to be a flaked wheat product. This discovery would lead to the introduction of Corn flakes.

The Kellogg brothers were to revolutionize breakfast foods with their introduction of ready to eat cereals. Their Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were a low fat, nutritious, and delicious alternative to the standard breakfast foods of the day. This new breakfast cereal was also just a shake of a box away from being set on the breakfast table. Even children could now fix up a healthy breakfast within minutes.

The first Kellogg’s cereal company opened in 1906 at Battle Creek Michigan under the name Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company and today Kellogg’s cereals have become one of the most popular breakfast foods on store shelves. Since the unexpected discovery of their very first toasted flake cereal Kellogg’s has introduced over 100 ready to eat cereals to its customers.

Kellogg’s Rice Krispies treats soon followed the cereal bearing its name. Kellogg’s famous puffed rice cereal Kellogg’s Rice Krispies came into being in 1927. The delicious Kellogg’s Rice Krispies treats were invented in 1939 by Mary Barber and the Home Economics staff at Kelloggs. The Rice Krispie treats appeared for the first time on the Kellogg’s Rice Krispie Box in 1940. Known as the talking cereal Rice Krispies brought Snap, Crackle, and Pop dancing into your kitchen and onto your breakfast table.

Wondering what the Special K Diet is all about?
The Kellogg’s Special K diet plan is quite simple. For two of your three daily meals you eat one cup of any of the Kellogg’s Special K cereals combined with no more than a 2/3 cup of skim milk. Your third meal you would consume whatever food you would normally consume for that meal.

You can snack on as many fruits and vegetables as you like throughout the day and also combine fruits or vegetables with your cereal meals to make them more filling. It was also recommended that you participate in the Kellogg’s Special K diet plan for a two week period but no longer.

To add variety to the Kellogg’s Special K diet plan you can consume snack or meal replacement bars as well. These Kellogg’s snack bars can be used to replace one of more of your cereal meals or as an additional snack during the day if one is needed. The Kellogg’s cereal diet works because substituting cereal in place of a high calorie breakfast greatly reduces your daily calorie intake. It also reduces the amount of fat in your daily food intake so logically you should be able to shed a few pounds of weight while on the Special K diet.

Most of the Kellogg’s cereals contain about 120 to 150 calories per bowl and when you add a half cup of low fat or skim milk which adds approximately another 40 to 60 calories, your Kellogg’s Special K cereal meal still adds up to a very low calorie low fat meal choice. There is also a Special K Diet Support Group within Yahoo groups.

They are a company that is more than just cereal. With a strong sense of community the Kellogg’s Company way back in 1930 decided to give back to the people who had made the company such a great success. The Great Depression was looming over the country but instead of conserving money, W.K. Kellogg with the statement, “I’ll invest my money in people” and opened the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Kellogg’s Company doubled their advertising campaign instead of reducing it. The 3 current work shifts at the plant were reduced so that another shift could be added and more people employed. The Kellogg’s Company provided K-rations for the U.S. army soldiers. It is one of the reasons why the Kellogg's cereals have built up such a fan base over the years.
